This disk set contains IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh, (IWM), version 4.0.1. IRMA WorkStation connects your Macintosh to an IBM host computer with 3270 sessions through a variety of connection methods, including
-- CUT coax
-- DFT coax
-- IBM Gateway (802.2 Token Ring)
-- TN/3270
-- IRMALAN Gateway
-- NetWare for SAA Server
-- Netway Gateway (new for this release)
-- MacMainFrame Gateway (new for this release)
-- Microsoft SNA Server (new for this release)
To install this software, insert the IRMA WorkStation Installer disk and double-click the Installer icon. Just follow the Installer's instructions. For most installations you can select Easy Install. If you are installing 3287 printer support, API support, or additional host language support for the first time you may need to use Customize instead.
If you are a user of mainframe graphics, you can install the optional IRMA Graphics for Macintosh product. Note that version 4.0 of the graphics software is required for compatibility with this version of IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh (you cannot use prior versions of graphics). The 4.0 release of IRMA Graphics for Macintosh features simplified installation procedures -- just double-click the Installer icon on the IRMA Graphics installation disk.
IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh (IWM) version 4.0 adds gateway and hardware connectivity options needed by users of Avatar's MacMainFrame emulator who are upgrading to IWM. It also incorporates significant connectivity and emulation feature additions, as well as emulation enhancements which will be familiar to MacMainFrame users.
In addition, version 4.0 provides support for 3270 connections through Microsoft's SNA Server (requires version 2.1 of the SNA Server, available from Microsoft).
This is a summary of the changes and new features that were added in version 4.0 and 4.0.1; please also refer to the IWM User's Guide for details of operation.
-- NEW FEATURES IN IRMA WORKSTATION 4.0.1 --
•• You can control the terminal model that's reported by IWM to your
TN/3270 gateway by choosing "3278" or "3279" in the TN/3270
settings dialog.
•• Command key equivalents for Send (command-U) and Receive
(command-D) are provided.
•• An option to ignore SCS commands has been added to host printer
options. Use this to override host LU1 printer settings with the
settings in IRMA WorkStation.
•• IND$FILE secondary allocation can be configured through a file
transfer dialog option.
•• The file transfer Host Option dialog now allows control of the
default host file name.
-- NEW FEATURES IN IRMA WORKSTATION 4.0.0 --
-- Connectivity --
•• Connections to MacMainFrame gateways.
•• Connections to Netway gateways.
•• Connections to the Microsoft SNA Server are supported. To use
this feature, you will also need version 2.1 of the SNA Server,
which adds AppleTalk support for 3270 connections, which is
available from Microsoft.
•• Coax connections (CUT and DFT) can use any installed Avatar
coax hardware, as well as DCA MacIRMA coax boards
including the new MacIRMA 7" NuBus coax board.
•• IBM Gateway connections (802.2 Token Ring) will use any
installed DCA/Microdyne MacIRMAtrac adapter (including the
new MacIRMAtrac 7" NuBus Token Ring), any Avatar or Tri-Data
Lanway or AvaTR Token Ring adapter, or certain models
of Apple's Token Talk adapters. (Please refer to the
"RESTRICTIONS" section for specific details on the Apple
adapters.)
The Avatar and Tri-Data adapter support also requires
the installation of MacIRMAtrac Token Ring driver software
version 3.0, which is included with this product. MacIRMAtrac
3.0 upgrades previous MacIRMAtrac and AvaTR driver software.
•• The Automatic Reconnect option allows you to have your
session automatically reconnected when the gateway is
available, if your session is unexpectedly disconnected.
•• The Gateway name or LU number is displayed to the left of
the bottom scroll bar. You can click on that area to pop up
the remaining information for that session (or pull down
the Info dialog from the Sessions menu to see the same
information for all sessions).
•• You can configure your sessions to be automatically
disconnected if they are idle for a specified time, to
protect your host login or to avoid tying up unused
gateway sessions.
-- Emulation and File Transfer --
•• This software includes "native" PowerPC code, for best
performance on a PowerMac. The software automatically
selects the right code whether you are using a 68000-based
model or one of the new PowerMac models.
•• Up to 8 emulation sessions can be configured, and optional
support for 16 sessions can be specified at installation.
(Total sessions are restricted by the connection method
in some cases: CUT allows 1 session, DFT allows up to 5
sessions, IRMALAN gateways allow up to 5 sessions, and
Netway sessions are limited to 8 in this release of IWM.)
•• Each session window's name now includes the profile
document's name.
•• A floating keyboard -- to locate 3270 keys or activate them
with the mouse -- is available by clicking the keyboard
tool at the bottom of your session window.
•• Additional Copy and Paste modes offer a variety of options.
•• After Pasting to the 3270 session, if there is more data in the
Macintosh clipboard which did not fit into your 3270 screen,
the Continue Paste option in the Edit menu lets you paste the
remaining data. Use this method to paste a large block of data
into a series of host screens.
•• Your choice of fonts includes both the IRMA WorkStation fonts
and the MacMainFrame fonts.
•• "4-color always" display color setting adds another mode for
display of 3270 base colors.
•• The "Alert on Playback Completion" checkbox allows you to
choose whether to hear your Macintosh beep when a macro
has finished. This is useful for long macros.
•• Batch file transfer lets you build lists of files to send or receive
through a single dialog selection. You can also select existing
batch files created with MacMainFrame and transfer them
using IRMA WorkStation.
•• Movable file transfer dialogs let you view your Macintosh drive
or mainframe screen while setting up the file transfer
configuration.
•• Tabs option lets you expand tabs into spaces when using IND$FILE
to transfer Macintosh files to the mainframe.
•• IND$FILE receive can be configured to support the control
characters beginning with "\" as defined by MacMainFrame.
•• For file transfers, the host record format now includes the
setting of "default," which allows the host file transfer
program -- IND$FILE or FT/Express -- to use its default host
record format. You can still specify a particular record format
with the pop-up in the file transfer configuration dialog.
•• In IND$FILE or FT/Express, to select the printer as destination
for a received file, use the "Output to Mac" pop-up to select
Printer instead of File. (For compatibility with FT/Express
host-initiated printing, the printer is also the destination if
the Mac filename is set to "PRN", "PRN:", "LPT1:", "LPT2:", or
"LPT3:".)
•• For 3287 printing or when receiving a file to printer, IRMA
WorkStation can detect PostScript that's contained in the print
job, and send it to the printer as PostScript commands. To
allow IRMA WorkStation to do this, check the "Allow PostScript
Printing" checkbox in the Printer Settings dialog for the 3287
session or for the display session you're going to transfer the
files with.
-- General --
•• When you install IWM, if MacMainFrame was previously
installed, the Installer will automatically upgrade your
MacMainFrame profiles (settings documents) to IWM 4.0.1
format. You can double-click the new profiles to bring up
the same sessions which you had configured using
MacMainFrame. It will not be necessary to create new
IWM profiles. The Installer saves backup copies of the
MMF profiles in a common folder.
•• The Installer can copy "standard" profiles that you create just
once -- simply copy any standard profiles to the IWM Installer
PROBLEMS FIXED AND OPERATIONAL CHANGES: The following problems have been resolved, and operational changes made, since IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh version 4.0.0:
-- Installation --
• Bus errors which could occur when installing or launching on certain Mac SE, SE/30, or LC configurations have been corrected.
• A problem creating a new folder for IWM installation on System 6 has been fixed.
• IWM no longer allows fonts to be installed in both the Fonts Folder and the System file. (But note that fonts are installed in the System file, instead of the Fonts Folder, if a Custom installation is performed. This will be corrected in the next version of IRMA WorkStation, which will adopt Apple's latest Installer program.)
• 16 session support was not always installed correctly.
• Country language support is now preserved when adding printer support.
• The MacIRMA DAL driver has been removed from the MacIRMA Utilities Disk since DAL now always uses the MacIRMA API driver for its host connectivity.
-- Connectivity --
• Conditions have been corrected where the X-Clock would not be cleared.
• RTM and LTTI display will always be on or off as configured. In addition, if RTM support is configured but a DFT connection is in use to a 3X74 control unit which does not have RTM support, local RTM will be performed by IRMA WorkStation.
• Corrected the detection of AppleTalk Remote Access v. 2.0 to prevent crashing for IRMALAN connections. Please also refer to the RESTRICTIONS section for further details.
• An inactivity timeout on one session could affect others.
• IRMALAN User ID and Password support has been re-enabled.
• Occasional problems when displaying the WorkStation Settings dialog for a MacMainFrame Gateway connection have been corrected, and a Mac SE can now connect to a MacMainFrame Gateway.
• Conditions which could cause an SNA error 988 have been eliminated.
• Connection of multiple sessions to a NetWare for SAA server was not working correctly in some cases. Also the unnecessary disconnection of sessions already in place to a gateway (of any type) will no longer occur.
• Occasional problems when disconnecting or reconnecting IBM Gateway sessions have been eliminated.
• For CUT coax connections, light pen input could be shifted by one field. The correct field will now always be reported.
• For CUT coax connections, the session will now reflect when the session has been Connected or Disconnected.
• Zone names beginning with a numeral are now shown in correct alphabetical order, in WorkStation Settings.
-- Emulation and File Transfer --
• The layering of 3270 emulation windows is now preserved in the IRMA WorkStation configuration profile, and restored when the profile is used.
• Host printing now allows page sizes larger than 132 columns (MPP) and 66 lines (MPL). Formerly, larger values could be entered into the Printer Settings dialog but would be ignored. Also note the addition of the Ignore SCS option, which can allow these settings to be used even if the host's LU1 commands specify a smaller page size. An appropriate font must also be used to fit the data on the printed page.
• Clicking the mouse or typing into a disconnected session window will no longer cause an alert (but IWM will beep to indicate that typing is ignored).
• The correct Host Settings Color dialog -- monochrome or color -- is now displayed for each session. In previous version, a user with some color and some monochrome sessions could be presented with the wrong dialog.
• Space to tab conversion, even if configured in Clipboard Settings, was not being performed. This has been corrected.
• The background color for a session on a Macintosh SE/30 is read correctly from the IWM profile.
• Keyboard Settings are supported on the PowerBook 500 series.
• The "split vertical bar" character now displays correctly in the IRMA-Armonk font.
• Intermittent crashes or hangs when quitting or saving have been corrected.
• The 3270 cursor is positioned at the end of pasted text.
• Occasional crashes when locking or unlocking profiles have been eliminated.
• Host file names are no longer restricted in length in the file transfer dialog.
• When running a MacMainFrame batch file, the "use tabs" option now also enables "interpret special characters" on receive.
• A batch file can now be in the same folder as the files being sent and received.
• If the target folder for a Batch receive does not exist, an appropriate error displayed (on editing Batch file) or an error is displayed and Batch transfer moves to next file instead of terminating.
• The Macintosh file name is not restored in the Receive dialog when Receive is first selected, or on return from Receive Configuration. This is to prevent a problem with the latest versions of the Macintosh file system, and DCA is working with Apple Computer, Inc. to determine if this functionality can be restored.
• Eliminate some intermittent file transfer failures ("waiting for..." alerts).
• MacBinary header interpretation is now compatible with SNA•ps and MacMainFrame MacBinary headers in file transfer.
The following problems were resolved, and operational changes made, since IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh version 3.1.1:
-- Installation --
• The files on the Installation disks are now compressed, and are automatically decompressed during installation.
• The end-user software license agreement is displayed for your acceptance at the beginning of the installation process.
• Eliminate occasional "PBHOpen error" conditions in Installer.
-- Connectivity --
• If you indicated your gateway or server name using "Any Gateway", the WorkStation Settings dialog will continue to indicate Any Gateway, and in addition, the name of the Gateway that is in use will be shown in parentheses.
• Fix SNA error 983 (typically occurred when logging in or starting file transfer, and IWM was not the foreground application)
• Correct the handling of x-clock and keyboard unlock to prevent sending PF or Enter keys twice to NetWare for SAA servers.
• Fix an X Prog 750 which could occur if IWM did not process the final portion of a TN/3270 message.
• Handle large read commands properly for IRMALAN gateway configured for multiple inbound segments.
• Add support for "non-SNA Read Modified All" required by certain TN/3270 servers.
• Don't ask for User ID for NetWare for SAA if it's not required.
• Provide a fix for incompatibility with AppleTalk Remote Access 2.0 and IRMALAN connections. Please see the "RESTRICTIONS" section of this Read Me for further information.
-- Emulation and File Transfer --
• The default setting is now 3279 colors, not monochrome, for new sessions.
• The default blue color is brighter and more legible.
• Fix a problem which could occur (but rarely) where half of the 3270 screen would not be refreshed.
• When Graphics is enabled, save and restore settings (such as gateway name) correctly.
• Fix application errors after printing to ImageWriter.
• When disconnecting on quitting the application, put up an alert if sessions are in use by API applications.
• The default file transfer selection is now IND$FILE. If you are using FT/Express, remember to set the file transfer pop-up and save your setting.
• No longer send the "AP" (append) option for IND$FILE TSO transfers, as some versions of TSO do not accept it.
• Eliminate potential half-minute delay at certain points during file transfer.
If you are using applications written to an Avatar or Tri-Data API interface, you should be aware of compatibility considerations.
The MacIRMA API is a HLLAPI-compatible implementation for the Macintosh and includes both C language and HyperCard interfaces. It is recommended that any new API development be written to MacIRMA API, which supports the entire range of host connectivity options provided by IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh.
If you are using one of the commercially available "Front End" products, it is likely to be available in a version which interfaces with MacIRMA API, even if you are currently using it with MacMainFrame API or the Tri-Data API.
If you are using custom API programs that are only written to the MacMainFrame API, note that you can continue using these programs. This includes programs which were developed using FrontCard. IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh supports the MacMainFrame API for coax connections, Token Ring (802.2 IBM Gateway) connections, and the Netway and MacMainFrame gateways. To install this capability, select MMF API from the Installer's Customize list.
The IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh product includes the Installer, which allows you to easily copy the files and resources that best suit your configuration.
When the installation is complete, the Installer will restart your Macintosh.
You can install IWM from an AppleShare server by dragging each of the IWM installation disks to the server. A folder will be created for each disk, and will have the same name as the disk. These folders, one per IWM installation disk, must all be within the same folder on the AppleShare server. Then, any Macintosh user with access to that server can mount the server, open the IRMA WS Installer folder, and double-click on the Installer icon.
Some virus protection software will conflict with the installation of IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh resources. It is best to disable virus protection by turning off all INITs (extensions) before installing. If you use System 7, you can accomplish this by restarting your Macintosh and holding down the SHIFT key. For System 6, turn off virus protection by removing the virus protection software from the System Folder and restarting.
In the unusual event that a System Error occurs while installing IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh to your hard drive, you may get a No Startup Disk error when restarting your system. If this occurs, you can restore your startup disk using the following procedure:
1. Restart your system from a startup diskette such as the Disk Tools diskette provided with your Macintosh.
2. Locate the folder named 'Installer Temp' on your hard drive.
3. There will be a System file in the Installer Temp folder. Drag it into your hard drive's System Folder. (You will be asked whether you want to replace the System file which is in the System Folder. Choose OK to replace the file.)
4. Discard the Installer Temp folder. You may now restart the system from the hard drive.
RESTRICTIONS: Known limitations, conflicts, and problems with this version of IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh…
NUMBER OF SESSIONS: This version of IWM supports up to 8 3270 sessions, with an option at installation time to increase this limit to 16 sessions. There are restrictions on this support with certain host connection types:
• CUT coax connections only support a single session
• DFT coax connections are restricted by the 3X74 control unit, generally to 5 sessions.
• IRMALAN gateways support a maximum of 5 sessions per workstation
• In this release of IWM, a maximum of 8 sessions are supported to the Netway
• To obtain more than 8 sessions from a MacMainFrame gateway, the gateway must be upgraded to MMF GW version 6.0.1, as prior versions allowed a configurable "maximum sessions per user" of up to 8 sessions.
APPLE TOKEN RING ADAPTERS: There are several Token Ring adapters available from Apple Computer, Inc. IRMA WorkStation can only connect to an IBM Gateway (TIC, 3174 TR Gateway, etc.) using the 802.2 LLC2 Token Ring protocols, on those adapters which support the required LLC2 protocols. All of the "long" (12-inch) NuBus adapters from Apple, including the Apple Token Ring 4/16 NB Card and the older 4 megabit-only card, are capable of supporting the LLC2 protocols. However, note that if you are using the latest Apple Network Software Installer (NSI v. 1.4.5, for AppleTalk v. 58.1.4) you will need to go into the Installer's Customize dialog and select "TokenTalk for Token Ring 4/16 NB Card w/SNA•ps" to install the required LLC2 support for connections to IBM mainframes.
Also note that the new 7" Token Ring card from Apple Computer, the Apple Token Ring NB/c card, does NOT support LLC2 connections to the IBM mainframe regardless of which installation option is chosen.
If LLC2 support is not available, IRMA WorkStation simply will not show "IBM Gateway" as an available host connection. Please bear in mind that this discussion applies only to direct 802.2 LLC2 connections to IBM mainframes via TIC or equivalent. These restrictions do NOT apply to gateway connections such as IRMALAN, NetWare for SAA, TN/3270, MacMainFrame GW, Netway, and SNA Server. Any Apple Token Ring card is capable of supporting these gateway connections.
For further information about Apple's Token Ring cards, please contact Apple Computer, Inc.
APPLETALK REMOTE ACCESS: There was an incompatibility with IWM that was introduced in AppleTalk Remote Access 2.0, which affected connections to IRMALAN gateways. There are now two ways to solve this incompatibility:
-- obtain AppleTalk Remote Access version 2.0.1 from Apple Computer, Inc. (or continue using version 1.0)
-- upgrade the "mitalk.exe" or "mitalk.sys" component on your IRMALAN gateway to version 3.2, and install this version of IRMA Workstation for Macintosh (4.0.1) on the Macintosh. The combination of mitalk 3.2 on the gateway and IWM 4.0.1 on the Macintosh will operate correctly even with AppleTalk Remote Access 2.0.
LASERWRITER 8.0: IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh is generally compatible with Apple's LaserWriter driver versions 8.X. However, the LaserWriter 8 drivers put up a new progress dialog even if background printing is enabled. The Apple LaserWriter driver may have problems if you use IRMA WorkStation dialogs, QuickPad, etc. while this progress dialog is displayed due to a 3287 print job in progress. If you typically have long 3287 print jobs printing in background, while continuing to use your Macintosh, it is recommended that you use LaserWriter driver version 7.1.2 until this problem is resolved. DCA is working with Apple Computer, Inc., to address this issue.
MICROSOFT SNA SERVER: IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh provides 3270 sessions using the Microsoft SNA Server, which runs on the Windows NT Advanced Server. The version of the Microsoft SNA Server which includes the required AppleTalk support is version 2.1.
FILE TRANSFER MEMORY UTILIZATION: If you are a heavy user of file transfer, you may need to increase the application memory size. For example, if you perform file transfers in more than two sessions at the same time, increase the application memory size. To do so, select the IRMA WorkStation for Macintosh application and choose Get Info from the Finder's File menu. The "current size" for memory usage will be 700K; increase this to at least 1000K.
FILE TRANSFER SIZES: File transfer structured field sizes will automatically be set to 2K when IWM is connected to a MacMainFrame gateway (and the structured field size will not be configurable in the file transfer settings). The MacMainFrame gateway does not currently support larger file transfer sizes.
AVATAR BATCH TRANSFER FILES: From IRMA WorkStation's Batch file transfer dialog, you can select existing MacMainFrame batch file transfer files (in addition to those created by IWM). There are certain options that are handled slightly differently by IWM. When sending a file which specifies tabs in the Avatar batch file, IWM will use the current tab setting in the IND$FILE dialog for that session.
MACMAINFRAME PROFILE CONVERSION: There are two ways to use an existing MacMainFrame configuration profile document with IWM. When you install IWM, any existing MMF profiles on drive to which IWM is installed will be converted to IWM profiles (and a backup of the MMF profiles will be saved). Also, IWM will recognize MMF profiles from the File-Open menu.
Keyboard layouts will only be converted at installation time (not from File-Open) and will reflect the MacMainFrame defaults. Keyboard layout conversion is only effective for US English host language, if your Macintosh keyboard is the Standard, Extended, LC/Classic, or Powerbook (1XX and 2XX series) model.
COAX DIAGNOSTICS: IRMA WorkStation fully supports installed Avatar coax cards. The IWM coax diagnostics will only be available with DCA MacIRMA coax cards, however.
